In a recent comparison of hospital claims and poison center data there was a discordance specifically due to what class of drugs?
Wang GS et al. compared hospital claims from the Colorado Hospital Association and poison center cases from the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety Center to describe cases of opioid, cannabis and synthetic cannabinoid related encounters. Both datasets showed an increase in cannabis related encounters/exposures. However, there was a discordance of opioid related encounters/exposures. Exposures to the poison center decreased by 11.1% for opioid cases during the study period whereas opioid-related ER visits increased by 50.7% during the study period. This authors comment on the strengths of utilizing different/multiple surveillance modalities to identify trends.
