What type of topical salicylate products are associated with the most hospitalizations after accidental ingestions in children?
Liquid preparations. A retrospective analysis of cases reported to a statewide poison control system from 2003-2018 identified 599 cases with predominantly no or minor symptoms. Liquid preparations were involved in only 58 cases but were responsible for six out of seven hospitalizations. Maximum methyl salicylate concentrations reported were 98% for liquid preparations compared to 30% for non-liquid preparations.
