What is the incidence of dexmedetomidine induced hyperpyrexia?
In one retrospective study by Grayson et al., 3.5% of patients receiving dexmedetomidine developed a temperature of > 39.5 C. Though the mechanism is unknown, the centrally acting effect on norepinephrine is opined to be culprit. (Grayson K et al. Dexmedetomidine-associated hyperthermia: a retrospective cohort study of intensive care unit admissions between 2009 and 2016. Anaesth Intensive Care. 2017 Nov;45(6):727-736.)
