After citalopram overdose, what is the effect of single-dose activated charcoal (SDAC) on QT interval prolongation?
A retrospective review of 254 intentional citalopram overdoses from February 1999 to March 2006 found that the administration of SDAC was associated with a 72% estimated relative risk reduction of developing an abnormal QT interval compared to patients who did not receive SDAC. Approximately 90% of SDAC administrations occurred between 1 and 4 hours post-ingestion. (Isbister GK et al. Activated Charcoal Decreases the Risk of QT Prolongation After Citalopram Overdose. Ann Emerg Med. 2007;50:593-600.)
