Though rare, this side effect of linezolid is associated with mortality?
Linezolid has been reported to cause lactic acidosis. Palenzeual L et al. hypothesize that the lactic acidosis and possibly other toxicities are caused by inhibition of mitochondrial protein synthesis. Additionally, they suggest that genetic polymorphisms in the 16S rRNA gene could predispose patients to linezolid toxicity. (Palenzuela L et al. Does Linezolid Cause Lactic Acidosis by Inhbiting Mitochrondial Protein Synthesis? Clinical Infectious Diseases 2005; 40:e113-116)
