What is the clinical significance of the drug interaction between valproate and carbapenem antibiotics?
Carbapenem antibiotics decrease serum valproate concentrations within 1-3 days after treatment initiation of the carbapenem. In a recent meta analysis, the mean reduction of valproate concentrations was 43.98 mg/L. Seizure frequency increased by 26.3% during combination therapy.
