In a retrospective, cross-sectional study performed in an urban hospital in Minneapolis, MN, what was the greatest risk factor for patients having physical restraints applied?
Drug and alcohol intoxication was associated with the highest odds ratio of having physical restraints (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 8.29; 95% confidence interval [CI] 7.94 to 8.65). A history of bipolar disorder/psychosis ([aOR] 1.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.21-1.33) or alcohol use disorder ([aOR] 1.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34-1.45) was also associated with use of restraints.
