Historical QOD 3/27/09: What illness is associated with domoic acid?
Domoic acid is associated with amnestic shellfish poisoning. Symptoms include nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, and short-term memory loss. More severe cases can present with severe respiratory secretions, labile blood pressure, seizures, and coma. Neuroexcitation is believed to be due to kainate receptor stimulation.
