Description
In 1991 the U.S. sent 700,000 troops to northern Saudi Arabia to counter Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. In a 5-week bombing campaign and a 5-day ground war, the Iraqi army was soundly defeated. However, as the troops were returning home approximately 150,000 became ill with fatigue, cognitive impairment, body aches, fever and diarrhea that became chronic. Suspected causes were fallout from bombing Iraqi nerve gas storage facilities, heavy pesticide use, depleted uranium in munitions, etc. After 3 decades of research evidence of an interaction between low-level nerve gas exposure and the PON1 Q192R polymorphism has finally solved the mystery.
