What is the clinical course of acetaminophen-induced nephropathy after overdose?
Acetaminophen nephrotoxicity appears to reflect acute tubular necrosis and has been reported in the absence of hepatotoxicity. Onset is most frequently reported 3-5 days after ingestion with peak serum creatinine reported 3-16 days post-ingestion with an average of 7 days post-ingestion. Renal function returned to baseline within one month for most patients with only 1% of cases requiring dialysis. (Mazer M, Perrone J. Acetaminophen-induced nephrotoxicity: pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and management. J Med Toxicol 2008;4(1):2-6.)
