On October 29, 2021, the MMWR reported that between 2018-2019, Rhode Island Department of Health and Missouri Department of Health investigated cases of metal poisonings associated with both commerically and home-prepared cakes decorated with luster dust. Luster dust products were found to have high levels of copper, lead and other heavy metals.
