Question- Hydroxychloroquine is often used in the treatment of systemic lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The risk of hydroxychloroquine-mediated retinal toxicity is generally considered to be relatively low within the first 5–10 years of therapy. How quickly might hydroxychloroquine-induced retinal toxicity develop?
Answer: Recent case reports describe that retinal toxicity may develop within only 24 months of the use of high dose hydroxychloroquine therapy. (Leung L et al. Rapid onset of retinal toxicity from high-dose hydroxychloroquine given for cancer therapy. 2015 Am L Opthalmol 160(4): 799-805)
