Title: Poison Center PharmD Toxicologist
Job Summary
A Doctor of Pharmacy board certified or board prepared in clinical toxicology (DABAT) who practices at North Carolina Poison Control (NCPC) and assists the Medical Director with clinical oversight of call center personnel, research, on-call toxicology services, bedside consultations, and training and education of staff and other healthcare providers.
Essential Functions
- Assists Medical Director with clinical supervision of NCPC’s nurse and pharmacist Specialists in Poison Information (SPIs).
- Engages in quality review of individual cases and provides case management and coding feedback to SPIs.
- Provides on-call toxicology services as a backup to nurses and pharmacists, with the number of days per month dependent on days covered by the Medical Director and NCPC’s consultant toxicologists.
- Leads SPI training program and provides routine updates to NCPC’s continuing education platform with input from the Medical Director, Clinical Manager, and SPI Education Committee.
- Participates in bedside consultations conducted by the Medical Director.
- Engages in scholarly research and publication related to clinical toxicology.
- Assists in the development and management of quality assurance projects for SPIs in conjunction with the Medical Director and Clinical Manager.
- Manages incoming cases as a SPI an average of four hours per week.
- Provides lectures at NCPC staff meetings and lectures to healthcare providers throughout North Carolina.
- Manages all aspects of clinical toxicology rotations for students and residents throughout North Carolina who are completing rotations with NCPC, as time permits.
- Supports overall goals and operations of NCPC and attends departmental leader and clinical toxicology meetings.
Physical Requirements
Works primarily in an office or call center setting, depending on current responsibilities. Number of remote working days also depends on center needs. Majority of time is sitting or standing with occasional lengthy meetings, lectures, and presentations. Offsite educational and clinical activities may be required. Must be able to operate computer and contact center programs and equipment and drive to regional healthcare facilities and meeting venues.

North Carolina Poison Control (NCPC), the third busiest poison center in the country, is a certified regional poison center serving the entire state of North Carolina. NCPC is located in Charlotte, NC and is hosted by Atrium Health, a large multi-state hospital system. NCPC is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary in 2022 and has a long-established, strong relationship with various public health agencies and healthcare facilities throughout the state. Education, Experience and Certifications
PharmD graduate from an ACPE accredited pharmacy school and 2 years of post-graduate training through a pharmacy residency, fellowship in clinical toxicology, or equivalent clinical pharmacy experience required. Licensed in the state of North Carolina or eligible for reciprocity. Must be a Diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology (DABAT) or DABAT certified within 2 years of hire. DABAT certification must be maintained. Teaching and research experience required.
