Title:
Marimastat: A Snakebite Drug on the Path to Patients

Description:
Snakebite envenoming remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly where access to antivenom is delayed. This session explores the contribution of snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) to tissue injury and systemic toxicity and examines marimastat as a potential early intervention. The presenter will review the rationale for SVMP inhibition, Pikralida’s preclinical and Phase I development, and the role of treatment timing. The session will also examine the FDA Animal Rule as a potential regulatory pathway, emphasizing the limitations of existing evidence and the distinction between investigational therapies and established clinical care.

Stanisław Pikul, PhD
