Acetaminophen, Adducts and Antidotes: Too much of a good thing? And what does the future hold?

Description:
Acetaminophen overdose remains one of the leading causes of acute liver failure, yet few technical, clinically relevant advances have been made in diagnosis and management of the critically ill, acetaminophen poisoned patient. Are acetaminophen-protein adducts truly the future? Is too much NAC, too much of a good thing? This session will review emerging evidence on acetaminophen-protein adducts as early biomarkers of hepatotoxicity and examine their potential role in improving patient assessment and clinical decision-making. The presentation will also explore data suggesting that while N-acetylcysteine (NAC) remains the cornerstone antidote for acetaminophen poisoning, prolonged or delayed administration may influence liver regeneration after injury.
