Title:
From Redlining to Greenlining: The Role of Pediatric Toxicologists in Advancing Environmental Justice

Description:
This presentation explores how environmental and toxicologic exposures continue to impact communities unevenly—and why. Many toxicologists may not realize that the disproportionate health burdens experienced by some communities today are often the result of policy decisions made decades ago.

Using lead exposure as a compelling case study, this session will examine the historical policies and practices that contributed to disadvantaged communities carrying a greater share of the health consequences associated with environmental toxins. Just as past decisions shaped today’s inequities, the policies and actions we take now can help change the future.

Attendees will gain insight into the critical role toxicologists can play in informing policy and advancing solutions that promote environmental and toxicologic health equity for all communities.

Presenter(s):
Danae Massengill, MD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Toxicologist, Children’s Hospital Colorado

Moderator:
Laurie Seidel Halmo, MD, FAAP
Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine
