Title:
Multidose activated charcoal in acute self-poisoning: a randomized controlled trial

Description:
This session examines the evidence surrounding activated charcoal use in acute self-poisoning, with a focus on the landmark randomized controlled trial evaluating multidose activated charcoal. Participants will review current indications for activated charcoal, analyze its impact on mortality outcomes, and explore how its efficacy varies by ingested substance — including oleander and organophosphates.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify the clinical indications for activated charcoal in the management of acute overdose ingestion.
• Evaluate the evidence on whether activated charcoal reduces mortality in acute self-poisoning.
• Compare single-dose and multidose activated charcoal regimens and assess their relative impact on patient outcomes.
• Differentiate the effect of activated charcoal on mortality in patients who ingested oleander versus organophosphates.
