Description
I will describe how substance-use disorders (SUDs) (the typical operationalization of addiction in the US) have been defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of the APA, from the DSM-I of the 1950s to the DSM-5 of the present. This is not history for history’s sake–it will clear up the confusion that surrounds vestigial terms such as “dependence” and “abuse.” I will argue that DSM-5 criteria for SUDs are useful and well-grounded in many respects, and frustratingly ambiguous and underdeveloped in others. I will discuss ongoing empirical and conceptual work on defining addiction, with attendant controversies.
