SUMMARY:AACT Trainee & Student Section Webinar: A PerPLEXing Procedure for Poisonings
DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nTitle:\nA PerPLEXing Procedure for Poisonings \nDescription:\nThe clinical applications for therapeutic plasma exchange (PLEX) or plasmapheresis have evolved over the years. Its different modalities and ability to be performed in tandem with dialysis circuits may have benefit in toxicologic cases. The rationale for its use in poisonings and envenomations stems from its ability to remove substances with larger molecular weight (>15\,000 Da)\, prolonged half-lives\, and high plasma protein binding that are not otherwise reliably removed via hemodialysis or hemoperfusion. Additionally\, it has benefit in removing pathogens in systemic conditions including autoimmune diseases\, hemolytic anemias\, severe sepsis\, and cytokine storms which may result from a wide array of severe poisonings. While it has been previously employed in amanita phalloides ingestions and acute liver failure\, its application in toxicology has been limited to case reports. A review of its modern mechanics and recent successful clinical uses may support its application as a reasonable therapeutic adjunct in severe toxicities or envenomations when no antidote or definitive treatment is available\, or when other specialized modalities such as ECMO are otherwise unavailable. \nPresenter:\nAndrea Nillas\, MD \nKathleen Chen\, MD \nModerator:\nMichael Keenan\, MD

DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nTitle:\nNot All Help Is Equal: Racial Disparities in MOUD Access \nDescription:\nDespite the known efficacy of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in reducing rates of overdose and death\, there is data to suggest that historically marginalized communities do not have equitable access to MOUD. Inequity in access is related to factors like persistent stigma\, disability\, structural segregation within the healthcare system\, racial disparities in incarceration\, unequal access to private insurance\, and the rising prevalence of fentanyl in urban communities. This webinar addresses root causes and gaps in the literature of such disparities to help improve awareness\, advocacy and facilitate change. \nPresenter(s):\nMichael Barnett\, M.D.\, M.S.\nSchool of Public Health\, Brown University \nModerator(s):\nAlexa Camarena-Michel\, MD\nToxicology Associates \nSukhshant Atti\, MD\nUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham \nOliver Grundmann\, PhD\nUniversity of Florida

SUMMARY:AACT Section Webinar: Envenomations
DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nTitle:\nPathogenesis of Local Tissue Damage Induced by Snake Venoms \nDescription:\nLocal tissue injury is a significant cause of morbidity in snake envenomation. This session will provide an in-depth review of current scientific understanding of the mechanisms underlying local tissue damage from snake venoms. This knowledge will help participants better understand the role of antivenoms in treating this aspect of snake envenomation and provide a better understanding of how novel and adjunctive treatment options may potentially harm or benefit patients. \nPresenters:\nDr. José María Gutiérrez\, PhD\nInstituto Clodomiro Picado\, Facultad de Microbiología\, Universidad de Costa Rica \nModerator:\nBryan Wilson\, MD\, FAACT\nSoutheast Texas Poison Center

SUMMARY:AACT Section Webinar: Geriatric Toxicology
DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nTitle:\nPolypharmacy and Deprescribing:\nPreventing Falls and False Dementia in Seniors \nDescription:\nThe Webinar title “Polypharmacy and Deprescribing: Preventing Falls and False Dementia” encourages clinical toxicologists to become informed and seek solutions to these common risks in seniors. \nPolypharmacy is common in seniors 65 and older with chronic illnesses such as hypertension\, diabetes2\, and obesity\, plus drug levels increase due to declining rates of metabolism. The vulnerable population is increasing in numbers and proportion. And\, seniors take 30% of prescribed medications while numbering 15% of the population. Approaches from the evidence-based literature will describe how deprescribing and Beers Criteria can effectively deal with these issues. \nPresenters:\nThomas L. DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nTitle:\nShroom: A Cultural History of the Magic Mushroom – Andy Letcher \nDescription:\nThe world of the magic mushroom is a place where shamans and hippies rub shoulders with psychiatrists\, poets\, and international bankers. Since its rediscovery only fifty years ago\, this hallucinogenic fungus\, once shunned in the West as the most pernicious of poisons\, has inspired a plethora of folktales and urban legends. In this timely and definitive study\, Andy Letcher chronicles the history of the magic mushroom—from its use by the Aztecs of Central America and the tribes of Siberia through to the present day—stripping away the myths and taking a critical and humorous look at the drug’s more recent manifestations. \nInformative\, lively\, and impeccably researched\, Shroom is a unique and engaging exploration of this most extraordinary of psychedelics. \n

SUMMARY:AACT Section Webinar: Clinical Toxicology in Sports
DESCRIPTION:Clinical Toxicology in Sports\nRegister Now! \n*Please note: Continuing education (CE) credit will not be offered for this webinar. \n\nTitle:\nSARMs to Harm: Ostarine-associated dyslipidemia and HPTA-axis suppression.\n \nDescription:\nThis session uses ostarine as a case study to clarify what “selective” means in selective androgen receptor modulators and where that selectivity breaks down in real-world use. We will review harms associated with SARMs\, with particular attention to the loss of functional selectivity at commonly used recreational doses and the resulting unintended androgenic effects across multiple tissues. The session will also cover tissue-specific androgen physiology and how these mechanisms translate into predictable clinical effects and adverse outcomes. Finally\, we will summarize the history of pharmaceutical SARM development and the reasons many programs were ultimately discontinued. Attendees should expect an evidence-based overview focused on risk recognition and clinical counseling. \nPresenters:\nMichael Marlin\, MD\nUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center \nZariad Saran\, MD\nUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center \nModerators:\nChristopher Hoyte\, MD\, FAACT\nRocky Mountain Poison Center and University of Colorado Department of Emergency Medicine\n\nMallory Pullman\, MD\nUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center
