SUMMARY:AACT Section Webinar: Pediatric Toxicology
DESCRIPTION:AACT Section Webinar: Pediatric Toxicology\nRegister Now!\nLocation:\nVirtual \nCost:\nAACT Members – Complimentary\nNon-members – $20 \nTitle:\nFrom Redlining to Greenlining: The Role of Pediatric Toxicologists in Advancing Environmental Justice\n \nDescription:\nThis presentation explores how environmental and toxicologic exposures continue to impact communities unevenly—and why. Many toxicologists may not realize that the disproportionate health burdens experienced by some communities today are often the result of policy decisions made decades ago. \nUsing lead exposure as a compelling case study\, this session will examine the historical policies and practices that contributed to disadvantaged communities carrying a greater share of the health consequences associated with environmental toxins. Just as past decisions shaped today’s inequities\, the policies and actions we take now can help change the future. \nAttendees will gain insight into the critical role toxicologists can play in informing policy and advancing solutions that promote environmental and toxicologic health equity for all communities. \nPresenter(s):\nDanae Massengill\, MD\nAssistant Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Toxicologist\, Children’s Hospital Colorado \nModerator:\nLaurie Seidel Halmo\, MD\, FAAP\nAssociate Professor of Pediatrics\, University of Colorado School of Medicine\n \n  \nContinuing Education: \nJoint Accreditation Statement \nIn support of improving patient care\, this activity has been planned and implemented by Amedco LLC and American Academy of Clinical Toxicology. SUMMARY:AACT National Book Club - July 2026
DESCRIPTION:Register Now! \n  \n \nBook:\nBlind Eye by James B. Stewart \nAlso joining the discussion will be special guest\, Tom Neer – retired Supervisory Special Agent with the Behavioral Analysis Unit! \n\nDescription:\nA medical thriller from Pulitzer Prize–winning author James B. Stewart about serial killer doctor Michael Swango and the medical community that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities. \nNo one could believe that the handsome young doctor might be a serial killer. Wherever he was hired—in Ohio\, Illinois\, New York\, South Dakota—Michael Swango at first seemed the model physician. Then his patients began dying under suspicious circumstances. \nAt once a gripping read and a hard-hitting look at the inner workings of the American medical system\, Blind Eye describes a professional hierarchy where doctors repeatedly accept the word of fellow physicians over that of nurses\, hospital employees\, and patients—even as horrible truths begin to emerge. With the prodigious investigative reporting that has defined his Pulitzer Prize–winning career\, James B. Stewart has tracked down survivors\, relatives of victims\, and shaken coworkers to unearth the evidence that may finally lead to Swango’s conviction. \nCombining meticulous research with spellbinding prose\, Stewart has written a shocking chronicle of a psychopathic doctor and of the medical establishment that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities. \n\nRegister Now! \n

DESCRIPTION:AACT Section Webinar: Acute & Intensive Care (AIC)\nRegister Now!\n\nTitle:\nAcetaminophen\, Adducts and Antidotes: Too much of a good thing? And what does the future hold?\n \nDescription:\nAcetaminophen overdose remains one of the leading causes of acute liver failure\, yet few technical\, clinically relevant advances have been made in diagnosis and management of the critically ill\, acetaminophen poisoned patient. Are acetaminophen-protein adducts truly the future? Is too much NAC\, too much of a good thing? This session will review emerging evidence on acetaminophen-protein adducts as early biomarkers of hepatotoxicity and examine their potential role in improving patient assessment and clinical decision-making. The presentation will also explore data suggesting that while N-acetylcysteine (NAC) remains the cornerstone antidote for acetaminophen poisoning\, prolonged or delayed administration may influence liver regeneration after injury. \nPresenters:\nLaura James\, MD\nDirector\, Translational Research Institute; Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical and Translational Research; Professor of Pediatrics\nTranslational Research Institute \nHartmut Jaeschke\, PhD\, ATS\, FAASLD\nUniversity Distinguished Professor\, Pharmacology\, Toxicology & Therapeutics\nKansas University Medical Center \n \nModerator:\nSukhshant Atti\, MD\nAssociate Professor\nUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham \n  \nAmerican Academy of Clinical Toxicology\nAcetaminophen\, Adducts and Antidotes: Too much of a good thing? SUMMARY:AACT National Book Club - December 2026
DESCRIPTION:Register Now! \n  \n \nBook:\nPlutopia by Kate Brown \nDescription: \nWhile many transnational histories of the nuclear arms race have been written\, Kate Brown provides the first definitive account of the great plutonium disasters of the United States and the Soviet Union. \nIn Plutopia\, Brown draws on official records and dozens of interviews to tell the extraordinary stories of Richland\, Washington and Ozersk\, Russia-the first two cities in the world to produce plutonium. To contain secrets\, American and Soviet leaders created plutopias–communities of nuclear families living in highly-subsidized\, limited-access atomic cities. Fully employed and medically monitored\, the residents of Richland and Ozersk enjoyed all the pleasures of consumer society\, while nearby\, migrants\, prisoners\, and soldiers were banned from plutopia–they lived in temporary “staging grounds” and often performed the most dangerous work at the plant. Brown shows that the plants’ segregation of permanent and temporary workers and of nuclear and non-nuclear zones created a bubble of immunity\, where dumps and accidents were glossed over and plant managers freely embezzled and polluted. In four decades\, the Hanford plant near Richland and the Maiak plant near Ozersk each issued at least 200 million curies of radioactive isotopes into the surrounding environment–equaling four Chernobyls–laying waste to hundreds of square miles and contaminating rivers\, fields\, forests\, and food supplies. Because of the decades of secrecy\, downwind and downriver neighbors of the plutonium plants had difficulty proving what they suspected\, that the rash of illnesses\, cancers\, and birth defects in their communities were caused by the plants’ radioactive emissions. Plutopia was successful because in its zoned-off isolation it appeared to deliver the promises of the American dream and Soviet communism; in reality\, it concealed disasters that remain highly unstable and threatening today. \nAn untold and profoundly important piece of Cold War history\, Plutopia invites readers to consider the nuclear footprint left by the arms race and the enormous price of paying for it. \nRegister Now! \n
